3D SCANNING and REVERSE ENGINNERING.

Everything you need to know about technology and what 3d scanning and reverse enginnering can help you with.

3d scanning allows a 3d file to be made by faithfully replicating any object so that it can be worked on, edited, viewed, inserted into the Meta environment, or used directly for the 3d printer.

The major use of this technology is the advantage of being able to have the STL file of the object so that you have the basis on which to begin the work of reverse engineering, the actual mathematics of the scanned model so that it can be sent to any 3d printer or CNC machine for prototype making.

We have several highly professional 3d scanners, each suitable for a specific job according to its size or quality of 3d scanning.

Below you will find a detailed description of the type of scanner and reverse engineering.

3d scanning

This technology allows for the faithful digital reproduction of any shape and size object.

The professional scanners we utlize are structured light type for small objects (under 100 mm) and laser type for objects with larger size; specifically, this type of 3d laser scanner is certified as a measuring instrument and does not need matting.

The produced file will be perfectly faithful to the scanned object by reproducing its merits and defects in every detail; it is suitable for any type of 3d printer.

Reverse engineering

Reverse engineering allows you to design in reverse, that is, from a physical object of which you have neither a digital format nor dimensional tables, to obtain after the 3d scanning process, the mathematics of the object in STP format net of all defects in the original model (inaccurate holes, plastic shrinkage, wear processes, etc.)…

The next step is the production of the prototype by 3d printing, silicone molds or CNC machines and then once verified proceed to series production.

Dimensional verifications

Dimensional verification is useful to be able to quickly and easily visualize via a report, dimensional discrepancies between the physical object and the 3d mathematics.

It is used, for example, after the first trials of injection molds in order to dimensionally verify the molded object (with the inevitable plastic shrinkage) to the original 3d math.

Another example of use is where high assembly precision is required in the aviation, automotive fields as there can be no errors in production.

Reproduction of after market objects

Reverse engineering is widely used for the production of objects mainly in the automotive context where there is no digital documentation of the model to be produced especially in cases where the production of non-original parts is needed. We faithfully produce 3d mathematics in STP format suitable for any production type.

Scanning 3d small and large objects

Our professional 3d scanners are suitable for detecting small objects (e.g., 10 mm) to large objects even several meters in size. The return will be of an STL file in case reverse engineering is not planned.

What we can and cannot scan

The 3d scanner can scan any object, but it can work with its structured light or laser only on parts it can “see”; it cannot scan hidden parts, hidden undercuts, hidden parts inside the object, etc… basically it cannot work on parts not visible to a camera or camera.

3D scanning conveniently at your location

We can come to your location with our equipment to scan your objects; we generally provide this type of service when the object to be scanned is large or otherwise cannot be transported to our location.

Tomography

Object tomography is classic CT scan used for humans in hospitals, but with higher accuracy.

It is used to scan any part of the object, even the hidden parts with extremely high definition and accuracy. We cannot process objects with dimensions larger than 150 mm per side.

It is not suitable for metal objects.
